Cervical Cancer in Seychelles
Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women in Seychelles. About 99% of cervical cancer is caused by high-risk Human Papillomavirus (HPV). A long-term untreated HPV infection may turn normal cervix cells into abnormal cells (pre-cancerous), which may multiply and lead to cancer.
Early Screening Prevents Cervical Cancer
Cervical cancer is one of the cancers which can be prevented through early diagnosis. Since the disease takes a long time to develop after initial HPV infection, early detection of precancerous lesions can effectively prevent the development of cervical cancer. By getting screened once in 5 years, you can significantly reduce your risk of cervical cancer. To facilitate early detection, MIOT is conducting a cervical cancer screening camp.
Empowering Women’s Health
With a commitment to the health and well-being of Seychellois women, MIOT conducted a cervical cancer screening camp in 2024. Encouraged by the overwhelming response and the benefits it provided to Seychellois, MIOT is organising the camp once again to commemorate Women’s Day. This initiative aims to raise awareness and reduce cervical cancer cases among women in Seychelles, reinforcing the importance of early detection and prevention.
MIOT’s Cervical Cancer Screening Camp
In MIOT’s Cervical Cancer Screening Camp, HPV and Pap co-testing is offered to Seychellois women to proactively detect cervical cancer risks. Conventionally, a pap smear is used for cervical cancer screening. To accurately detect HPV infections, MIOT uses a highly advanced automated technology that delivers faster results with zero errors. Below are some advantages of the test:
Who Should Undergo this Screening?
Why is MIOT’s Cervical Cancer Screening Important?
- Early Detection: Detects HPV infection even before any cell abnormalities occur
- Increased Accuracy: Reduces the chance of diagnosis errors, ensuring a more reliable screening
- Longer Screening Interval: Co-testing allows for a 5 years screening interval, whereas a pap smear test requires screening every 3 years
- Improved Risk Assessment: Detecting high-risk HPV types can help determine the level of follow-up care needed and guide treatment decisions
MIOT’s Cervical Cancer Research Among Seychellois Women

The study findings strongly suggest that co-testing is more effective in detecting high-risk HPV infections and preventing the development of cervical cancer.
