MIOT has reached the 25-year milestone, could you share some insights into this journey?
25 years ago my father laid the foundation with a modest 40-bed hospital specialising in trauma and orthopaedics. Today, MIOT boasts 1000 beds and spans across 63 specialties. With branches in several countries, including Fiji, Seychelles, Maldives, and Uzbekistan, and a dedicated staff of 3000, MIOT has evolved significantly. This milestone marks our transition into a centre of excellence. Our aim in Seychelles is clear to provide comprehensive medical care locally, eliminating the need for Seychellois citizens to travel abroad for treatment.
How has MIOT been faring in Seychelles?
Our focus in Seychelles lies in providing services that were previously unavailable locally. Over the past 15 years, MIOT Chennai has been serving Seychellois patients, building a strong understanding of their healthcare needs. We identified gaps, such as the absence of eye surgery services, and promptly addressed them. The challenge now is the prohibitive cost and logistical hurdles associated with overseas treatment and specialist visits. Despite these challenges, our current services are meeting the needs of the population, and we remain committed to serving them. What motivated the introduction of next-gen telemedicine in Seychelles?
Patients need to consult a specialist and our new-age telemedicine brings expert doctors from MIOT international (Chennai) right next to the patient in real-time. Until two weeks ago, we were doing whatsapp calls or video calls. But with our new next-gen telemedicine, essential diagnostics can be performed during the teleconsultation and real-time feedback received from the doctor. This helps ensure treatment planning without delay, experience a seamless process from diagnostics to MIOT'S world-class medical care and regain perfect health. With telemedicine it is bringing the service to the patients. What insights have you gained from the Seychellois market?
Many Seychellois seek comprehensive diagnoses, particularly those with family histories of chronic diseases or cancer. Recognising this need, we have introduced Master Health Check-ups tailored to both men and women. These check-ups encompass a range of diagnostics, including X-Ray, ECG, USG-Abdomen, Post-Void Residual, Prostate- Specific Antigen for men, USG Pelvis and Breast for women, complete blood count, Lipid profile, Sodium and potassium, Urea and Creatinine, Random glucose, HbA1c, TSH and a consultation with a general physician. We have also introduced the Cardiac master health check-up for both men and women, which include advanced Echo studies of the heart. Another issue we are seeing is also irregular heartbeat. We have introduced the Holter machine a wearable device that records the heart's rhythm which can monitor the heart status continuously 24/7.
Following the recent explosion in Seychelles, which highlighted a lack of mental health support, will MIOT be addressing this issue?
MIOT has already taken steps to assist in this area. We dispatched a doctor to Seychelles for a 10 day period, focusing initially on addiction in adults and autism in children. The response was encouraging, and we plan to further develop our mental health services in Seychelles. During the Covid-19 pandemic, MIOT launched the 'Unlock Your Mind' programme, connecting patients and caregivers with psychiatry specialists to address the emotional challenges brought about by the pandemic. This initiative has proven beneficial, particularly for the elderly population.
What has been your experience working with Seychellois?
There are a lot of similarities between Seychellois and Indians. We like families, we like food and we like good prices. Once they establish this kinship, they feel at home! At MIOT, we prioritise continuity of care; with full-time staff ensuring patients see the same familiar faces during their visits, fostering a strong connection. Retaining the human touch in healthcare is paramount, and we emphasise the importance of staff dedicating time to care for patients.Over the years, we've maintained this approach, ensuring personalised and com- passionate care. Additionally, understanding the disease patterns and ad- dressing affordability concerns are crucial aspects of our service delivery. Leveraging technology responsibly allows us to achieve optimal results while ensuring accessibility for all.
What is your future plan for Seychelles?
Here at Espace Building we are tenants and our goal is how do we advance to the next level and provide better, bigger services so that less people travel abroad. Currently we are in discussion to execute a four-storey purpose built medical facility in Mont Fleuri. This expansion will allow us to better cater to the healthcare needs of Seychellois.Press Coverage
